Differences Between Evolution & Creation

Ever since the dawn of time, man has wondered about his origins. How did we get here? Were we crafted by an intelligent creator or created by an evolutionary process? Scientists today still argue over the answer to these questions.

  1. Big Bang Theory

    • The "Big Bang Theory," the idea that the world was created by some massive explosion of matter, is not mutually exclusive. Whether the event took place thousands or billions of years ago, it is one possible explanation for the formation of the universe. Evolutionists would say that the "bang" was naturally occurring, while some creationists would argue that the explosion was set in motion by the supernatural will of an intelligent creator.

    The Age of the Earth

    • One issue in this debate is the actual age of the earth. The National Center for Science Education dates the earth at about 4.5 billion years, based on isotope dating on rocks, meteorite and lunar materials. Dr. Russel Humphrys, associate professor of physics at the Institute for Creation Research, gives 14 reasons why the earth is only 6,000 years old.

    Uniformitarianism vs. Catastrophism

    • Uniformitarian evolutionists, such as Charles Lyell, claim that the many layers of sediment that make up rock layers were created slowly over time by the recession of glaciers and other natural processes. Creationists contend that the same rock layers were formed quickly, by a sudden, global catastrophe such as a global flood.

Intelligent Design vs. Gradual Evolution of Species

    • Creationists subscribe to the theory of intelligent design, the idea that an intelligent being designed humans, mammals, birds, fish and all other life forms independently of each other. Evolutionists will claim that man came into being by a gradual process of evolution, starting with single cell organisms, working up through the "missing link" stages until modern man was produced.

    Evolution vs. Diversification

    • In his famous book, Origin of the Species, Charles Darwin writes his observations of the finches in the Galapagos Islands. He documents how the beaks of the finches change as the birds' environments change. Evolutionists would call this modern proof of evolution, while creationists look at it differently. They claim that all the information necessary for the different types of beaks is already contained in the bird's genes, and the different beaks are only different expressions of those genes.
