Anxiety & Pain

Science has established that pain and anxiety often travel together. Studies indicate that the two conditions feed off of each other, with anxiety being an already underlying condition to pain in many cases.

  1. Theory

    • The relationship between pain and anxiety has led researchers to theorize that treatment of the anxiety may actually be the starting point for the treatment of pain.

    Considerations

    • Research indicates that people who suffer from chronic pain and anxiety seem to have lower-than-normal levels of certain kinds of chemicals in their brains and/or in their endorphins.

    Significance

    • As studies continue, and as researchers work to isolate the chemical and structural differences in the brain and hormone levels of sufferers, a new, more effective approach to treatment may be engineered.

    Treatment

    • Options that are currently being used include drugs, counseling, acupuncture, relaxation, meditation and biofeedback.

    Warning

    • Contact a qualified medical practitioner if you are suffering from chronic pain and/or anxiety.
