Heartbeat Facts

The human heart is a fist-sized organ residing within the rib cage, behind the sternum in the center of the chest. When it contracts, it sends blood through its atria and ventricles and out to the blood vessels in the body.

  1. Fetal Heart Rate

    • The heart rate of a human fetus beats about 80 beats per minute at the fifth week, increasing to 155 to 195 beats per minute by the ninth week, and falling to a range of 120 to 160 beats per minute by the twelfth week.

    Child Heart Rate

    • A child's heart rate is about 90 beats per minute in order to pump enough blood throughout the small body.

    Adult Heart Rate

    • Adult heart rates vary from 50 to 100 beats per minute in healthy adults. Those who exercise regularly have lower heart rates than the average, which is 70 beats per minute.

    Beats per Lifetime

    • The human heart beats 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime.

    Irregular Heartbeats

    • Irregular heartbeats occur after heart attacks, electrolyte imbalances in your blood, after injury, during the healing process after heart surgery and due to coronary heart disease.
