What Does Walmart Look for on a Background Check?

As one of the largest employers in the United States, Walmart receives many applications from a diverse group of job seekers. At Walmart, as is the case with most businesses, background checks are a commonplace part of the hiring process.

  1. Walmart Background Checks

    • All Walmart and Sam's Club applicants are required to undergo a criminal background check in compliance with local laws. This program was launched nationwide in 2004.

    Federal Policies

    • Federal laws allow employees to require potential hires to pass criminal background checks and drug tests as a condition of employment.

    State Policies

    • Not all states allow employers to access and/or take into account background check information from a state other than the one that the hiring process takes place in. But in some states, statutes of limitations on criminal convictions apply.

    Red Flags

    • Depending on the state, certain types of previous convictions might result in automatic ineligibility for employment at Walmart or Sam's Club. Falsifying information on a background check form is an automatic disqualification.

    When Applying

    • Be upfront about any previous convictions on your record. Depending on the state you live, and the state or states where the offense(s) occurred, a criminal record might not necessarily disqualify you from employment.
