Goat Weed Benefits

Horny goat weed, also known as epimedium, is a species of perennials. It is native to Asia and has been used in China for more than 2,000 years. It is believed to be aphrodisiacs, although people use it for a variety of practices.

  1. Goat Weed

    • Horny goat weed belongs to a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the berberidaceae family. It is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region, and is one of the most popular nutritional supplements in America. It can be purchased in a raw herb form as well as a pill.

    How it Works

    • Icarin, which can be found in standardized extracts from 5 percent up to 60 percent potent, is the active component in epimedium. Icarin increases the levels of nitric acid in the body, relaxing the muscles. It also contains flavonoids and phytoestrogens, which have antioxidant activity.

    Garden Uses

    • Certain varieties are recommended for dry shade, and most are beautiful ground cover plants. They are popular in Japan and are beginning to gain recognition in the West.

    Benefits

    • According to ancient Chinese legend, horny goat weed is a powerful aphrodisiac and heightens the sensitivity of sensory nerves as well as increasing the production of sperm and testosterone levels. It also can be used to treat kidney and liver disorders, infections, high blood pressure, fatigue, heart disease and helps with memory loss.

    Side Effects

    • Known side effects are the inhibition of the cholinesterase enzyme, which can lead to risk of muscle loss and coordination. High doses of icarin can be harmful to the kidneys and liver. Always consult your physician before consuming any supplements.
