Side Effects of Elmiron
Elmiron is the only brand-name version of the generic drug pentosan polysulfate. Manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, it is prescribed to treat bladder discomfort and pain resulting from interstitial cystitis, a disease that causes the bladder wall to scar and swell.

Common Side Effects
-
According to Ortho-McNeil, side effects of Elmiron are usually infrequent and mild. They typically include abdominal pain, abnormal liver function, bloody stool, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea, rash and upset stomach.
Hair Loss
-
Another common side effect is hair loss, which tends to affect only one area of the scalp. The hair grows back once usage of Elmiron stops.
-
Bleeding
-
Because Elmiron is a weak blood thinner (anticoagulant), bleeding may increase during usage. As a result, appropriate precautions are necessary if the user starts anticoagulant therapy or has surgery.
Medical Intervention
-
Additional side effects of pentosan polysulfate include heartburn, moodiness and problems falling or remaining asleep. If any of Elmiron's common side effects persist or become severe, consult a doctor.
Severe Side Effects
-
Medical assistance is required immediately if a user experiences abnormal bleeding or bruising; black, bloody red or tarry stool; heavily bleeding gums; a nosebleed; or vomit containing blood or particles that resemble ground coffee.
