Are Visas Required for Eastern Mediterranean Cruises?

Filled with ancient history, cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean countries have entry requirements that vary between nations. Departing from or visiting Greece and Italy, ships may call on Croatia, Libya, Montenegro, Turkey or Slovenia. Visas, if applicable, should be obtained in advance.

Schengen Members

Providing U.S. citizens a visa-free entry into any Schengen country, of which Greece, Italy and Slovenia are participant members, visitors only need a valid U.S. passport for entrance at the border control.

Croatia

Sailing to the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia does not require a visa for U.S. citizens, and only a valid passport is needed for entry.

Libya

Restrictions previously in place were lifted for travelers from the US to the North African nation of Libya in February 2004; however, both a valid passport and visa are needed and it is imperative to check with the cruise line and the US State Department for specific details.

Montenegro

Entry requirements in the small Balkan nation of Montenegro state that U.S. citizens need only a valid passport, and a visa is not necessary for entrance.

Turkey

Requirements for Turkey affirm that a passport and visa are mandatory, but as a cruise passenger, a day trip into Turkey only entails a passport, as long as you are not planning an overnight stay in the country.
