Cell Phone Etiquette for Incoming Calls

Cell phones serve many purposes, particularly during emergency situations. However, with the growing increase of cell phone users, it is important to note there is now an etiquette to using cell phones in public.

  1. Live Performance

    • Cells phones should always be turned off or silenced when in a theater. It is rude to take a phone call during a performance or a film, and it prevents others from enjoying the show.

    Restaurants

    • In a restaurant setting, only take calls if they are an emergency. Be sure to make the conversation quick or excuse yourself and take the call outside the restaurant. Also, apologize to your guests for taking the call.

    Loud Voice

    • When answering an incoming call in public, be aware of the loudness of your voice. No one is interested in listening to your conversation. It is essential to speak in a quiet tone.

    Subject Matter

    • Keep personal and/or emotional conversations in the privacy of your own home. It is rude to discuss inappropriate topics such as sex or how much you dislike your mother-in-law. In addition, avoid having heated arguments in public. It is rude and makes others uncomfortable.

    Driving

    • Incoming calls should not be taken while driving a vehicle. If you must take calls while driving, be sure to use the speaker feature or a headset.
