Pomegranates Farming

The worldwide demand for the colorful red fruit known as the pomegranate is growing, creating an interest in pomegranate farming and harvesting methods.

  1. Geography

    • Evidence of pomegranate cultivation dates back to ancient Mesopotamia and India, nearly 3,000 years ago. In the United States, most pomegranate orchards are found in dry areas of the South, Southwest and the West Coast.

    Size

    • A pomegranate orchard averages around 200 trees per acre of land. According to University of California Cooperative Extension, the number of acres planted with pomegranate trees in California has increased to 29,000 (2009), up from 15,000 a few years before (2006).

    Conditions

    • Loamy soil full of calcium is ideal for growing pomegranates. The trees thrive in sunny warm climates and can withstand low water conditions.

    Uses

    • Pomegranates are used as fresh produce and as flavoring in foods like dessert syrups and ice cream. Pomegranates contain antioxidants and many vitamins and minerals.

    Types

    • U.S. pomegranate orchards primarily grow three types of the fruit--Early Wonderful, Wonderful and Foothill Early.
