Dangers of Bungee Jumping

Bungee jumping is a fun sport where participants dive from a high point with their legs attached to the take-off point by a very long bungee or elastic cord. The risk involved qualifies this activity as an "extreme" sport.

  1. Precautions

    • Anyone who is pregnant or has issues with blood pressure or their heart should not participate in this sport. Additionally, anyone with back or neck problems, and/or head injuries, should not jump.

    Considerations

    • A bungee jumper's height and weight will be assessed to choose the correct equipment for her size.

    Extra Equipment

    • Some bungee-jumping companies employ special equipment, such as a giant air bags or safety nets under the jumping area, to ensure safety in the event of a fall.

    Research

    • Before you jump, make sure the company you are working with is licensed, their employees are well-trained and they have not had any safety violations. Contact the Better Business Bureau for more information on specific companies (see Resources).

    Warning

    • If the equipment fails, you could fall from a very extreme height at a very fast speed. Death or a life-changing injury is almost certain.
