Proin is the brand name for the generic medicine phenylpropanolamine. This is for urinary incontinence in pets, but every so often is used as a decongestant. Typically, it is given two to three times a day.

Proin, or phenylpropanolamine, is available in oral suspension form or in 25mg chewables, 50mg chewables, or 75mg chewables.

Rule out kidney disease or infections of the bladder before starting Proin. Several days will be needed to see how the drug will affect the animal and at what dose works best. Keep the medicine out of light so that it will not lose potency.

Proin works by releasing norepinephrine, a hormone in the body. Chronic use of the drug can result in being resistant to its effects.

Proin should not be used with Anipryl (L-Deprenyl) as it will result in fluctuating blood pressure in the animal. If given with Amitriptyline or other antidepressants, it can result in hypertension. Also, using it with NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or Amitraz (Preventic tick control, Promeris flea control) can result in hypertension.

Some side effects are rapid heart rate, restlessness and a rise in blood pressure from the "flight or fight" response. It sometimes causes irritability in humans, so it may do the same in animals.
