Information on Hydrogen Cars

Cars powered by hydrogen either have a H2ICE (hydrogen internal combustion engine) or make use of a hydrogen fuel cell. Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) have an electric motor that runs on electricity created by the hydrogen fuel cell.

  1. Fuel Cell

    • In a fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity needed by the electric engine. Fuel cells do not need to be charged like electric batteries; they just need a supply of hydrogen.

    Storage

    • Hydrogen has to be compressed before it can be stored in a car. This requires a lot of energy, which adds to the cost of the hydrogen as a fuel in cars.

    Hydrogen

    • Hydrogen cars are environmentally friendly because there are no toxic emissions. The only thing that comes out of the exhaust pipe is water.

    Hydrogen as a Fuel

    • Hydrogen is not a fuel in the conventional terms because hydrogen production requires energy. Hydrogen can be produced from natural gas, coal, electrolysis or sunlight.

    Cars

    • Some examples of hydrogen powered cars include Honda FCX Clarity, Chevrolet, Equinox, BMW Hydrogen 7 and Cadillac Provoq.
