Neurologist Definition

A neurologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats nervous system disorders. These conditions include muscle, spinal cord, nerve and brain diseases. Pediatric neurologists specialize in treating nervous system disorders affecting children. Chiropractic neurologists do not use prescription medicine or surgery in their treatment.

  1. Education

    • Neurologists are graduates of medical colleges and receive a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree. They must complete a one year internship and at least three years in neurology residency.

    Tests

    • Neurological exams performed by neurologists include memory, speech, language, sensation, balance, ambulation, reflexes, muscles and nerves. Neurologists also perform diagnostic tests such as CAT scans, MRI, lumbar puncture and EEG.

    Residency

    • Residency programs give neurologists supervised hospital experience, research training, and continued education through conferences. Neurology residents can continue training in a fellowship program after the residency ends.

    Board Certification

    • Neurologists can become board certified after completing their educational requirements. This certification comes through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

    Chiropractic Neurologist

    • Chiropractic neurologists complete three years of neurology studies and residency training beyond their chiropractic studies. They treat movement disorders with chiropractic adjustments, sensory system stimulation or neuromuscular re-education exercises.
