A neurologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats nervous system disorders. These conditions include muscle, spinal cord, nerve and brain diseases. Pediatric neurologists specialize in treating nervous system disorders affecting children. Chiropractic neurologists do not use prescription medicine or surgery in their treatment.

Neurologists are graduates of medical colleges and receive a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree. They must complete a one year internship and at least three years in neurology residency.

Neurological exams performed by neurologists include memory, speech, language, sensation, balance, ambulation, reflexes, muscles and nerves. Neurologists also perform diagnostic tests such as CAT scans, MRI, lumbar puncture and EEG.
