While smoking opium may seem exotic and tantalizing, the truth could not be farther from the image. Once used as a powerful painkiller, opium's negative effects vastly outweigh the positive.

    Features

  1. Smoking opium causes much the same result as a sedative. The muscles relax, breathing slows and the user experiences euphoria.
  2. Effects

  3. Smoking opium can also cause medical side effects, such as nausea and constipation. It also confuses and disorients the user.
  4. Dependence

  5. The longer a person uses opium, the more he must smoke to reach a euphoric state.
  6. Risks

  7. Death is possible through large doses of opium. Overdosing is not uncommon as long-term users must consume enough to get the same effect that smaller doses used to give.
  8. Warning

  9. Opium acts as a depressant, and repeated use can lead to permanent slowing of the respiratory system.
  10. Withdrawal

  11. Addiction comes quickly with opium; those who stop smoking suffer from effects such as sweating, shaking, nausea and the chills.
