Pregnancy & Breast Growth
Changes in your breasts are common throughout pregnancy, including breast growth. Being familiar with the facts behind pregnancy and breast growth will help you know what to expect and how to deal with your expanding bustline.
-
Causes
-
Breast growth during pregnancy is caused by increased progesterone and estrogen. These two hormones cause the ducts, blood vessels and glandular tissue in your breasts to expand and grow in preparation for providing milk for your baby.
Typical Growth
-
According to BabyCenter.com, your breasts could increase one or even two cup sizes during pregnancy, particularly if you're pregnant with your first baby.
-
Signs
-
Signs of breast growth include breast itching or irritation (from the stretching skin), and you may even notice mild stretch marks. Your nipples and areolas (the dark areas around your nipples) will also darken and get larger as you progress through your pregnancy.
Care
-
To reduce soreness from breast growth during pregnancy, the American Pregnancy Association suggests that you invest in a new set of supportive bras. Look for a supportive bra (without underwire) that has adjustable closures and wide straps.
Considerations
-
Breast growth during pregnancy is often accompanied by increased sensitivity and breast tenderness. Even though you may be tempted to stop, the American Pregnancy Association states that you should continue conducting breast self-exams throughout your pregnancy, preferably every four to five weeks.
