Common Food Sources of Salmonella

Salmonella is a intestinal condition that is caused by bacteria. Humans may get sick from Salmonella after consuming contaminated food or water. Salmonella infections are characterized by fever, chills, nausea, headache, muscle aches, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms may last up to seven days.

  1. Raw Meats

    • Salmonella may be present in raw meat or poultry that has been contaminated with feces containing salmonella bacteria.

    Seafood

    • Seafood that has been living in contaminated water may contain salmonella bacteria.

    Raw Eggs

    • In some cases, chickens that are infected with the salmonella bacteria may lay eggs that contain the salmonella bacteria.

    Vegetables and Fruits

    • Vegetables and fruits could contain salmonella bacteria if they are watered or rinsed with contaminated water. They could also be exposed to contaminated raw meats during food preparation in your kitchen.

    Other Food Items

    • Any food item can become contaminated with salmonella. Most commonly foods are contaminated with salmonella when people do not wash their hands after using the restroom or when people handle pets such as reptiles and birds prior to handling food items.
