IQ & Level of Functioning

IQ (intelligent quotient) scores are designed to intelligence. Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is one test that is used to measure general intelligence. While IQ scores do not necessarily dictate what the level of functioning for an individual is, it can be a useful tool for identifying general intellectual ability.

  1. Genius (130+)

    • Individuals scoring in this range are considered gifted. Occupations such as college professor, scientist, engineer and top civil servants are associated with this range. Learning new information is typically not difficult for these individuals.

Above Average and Superior (115 to 129)

    • Individuals scoring in this range tend to have the ability to succeed in school. Many advance to careers such as medical physician, lawyer, accountant, etc.

    Average (85 to114)

    • This range represents 50 percent of individuals in society. Level of functioning is considered average. No gross impairments in the ability to complete daily living tasks are typically noted with these individuals.

    Borderline (70 to 84)

    • Abstract thought is difficult if not impossible for some individuals scoring in this range. Individuals are able to do self-care tasks and work simple jobs but may need additional help and reminders.

Mild to Moderate Mental Retardation (40 to 69)

    • Individuals scoring in this range often have impaired memory, underdeveloped language skills, and impaired learning ability. Employment in sheltered workshops or other environments where simple tasks are completed under strict supervision may be possible.

Severe to Profound Mental Retardation (39 and below)

    • Individuals scoring in this range often require constant supervision and are unable to complete self-care tasks. Life expectancy is low due to the high likelihood of disease.
