Symptoms of Honeymoon Cystitis

Honeymoon cystitis, a name colloquially given to a urinary tract infection, is a type of bacterial infection in the urinary tract. Often confused with a bladder infection, honeymoon cystitis is actually confined to the urethra. Since it is often caused by frequent intercourse, it takes its name from bygone days when women were more likely to be virgins on their honeymoons.

  1. Urinary Symptoms

    • There is usually a very strong urge to urinate and pain or a stinging sensation during urination. Frequency of urination with low urine flow is another symptom of honeymoon cystitis. Sometimes there will be blood in the urine.

    Pain

    • Many women suffering from this type of urinary tract infection will have pain or a feeling of pressure above the pubic bone.

    Fever

    • Occasionally a low grade fever accompanies honeymoon cystitis. A high temperature that lingers, however, could be a sign that the infection has spread.

    Other Symptoms

    • Many people with honeymoon cystitis complain of feeling jittery, fatigued and irritable.

    Precautions

    • To avoid honeymoon cystitis, drink plenty of water and be sure to urinate immediately after intercourse.
