What To Expect in a Marriage Immigration Interview

An interview is one of the final requirements before a spousal visa is granted. During this interview, the foreign officer will verify the information presented in the application as well as ask questions which examine the validity of the marriage and the intent of the applicant.

  1. Verification of Information

    • The consular officer will ask questions verifying the information on the application. This can include questions about previous spouses, previous visas or applications which were denied, past visits to the United States and prior addresses or occupations.

    Finances

    • The immigrant and sponsor's finances will be examined. The immigrant may be asked to confirm current savings amounts as well as the salary and relationship of any sponsors and co-sponsors.

    Relationship

    • Questions regarding the couple's relationship, such as where the couple met, how long their relationship has lasted, how often the couple have visited and their current living arrangements may be asked. The consular officer may require additional proof in the form of photos, plane tickets, passport stamps, or affidavits from friends and family attesting to the validity of the relationship.

    Intent

    • The consular officer will ask questions that examine the intent of the couple, such as where they intend to live and what the immigrant's plans are once arriving in the United States.

    Travel Plans

    • Finally, the officer may ask questions about when the immigrant plans on traveling to the United States. This can help determine the period of validity for the visa.
