The Circulation of Blood in Humans

Blood circulation is essential for a healthy body. Blood that is rich in oxygen is sent to the body organs, tissues and cells to nourish them, and the waste products that result are disposed of through the same system.

  1. The Heart

    • The human heart is divided into two sides by the septum. There are two chambers in each side: an atrium and a ventricle.

    Systemic Circulation

    • Blood that is rich in oxygen flows from the left side of the heart into the aorta. The aorta pumps the blood to all body tissues.

    Pulmonary Circulation

    • Blood that has lost its oxygen is returned to the right side of the heart. The pulmonary artery then pumps the blood to the lungs, where it will again pick up oxygen.

    Coronary Circulation

    • The heart muscle, or myocardium, needs oxygen to function properly. The coronary arteries and veins work together to ensure sufficient blood flow to the myocardium.

    Gas Exchange

    • Blood brings oxygen to body tissues to nourish the cells and carries away carbon dioxide and waste products. This gas exchange is vital to the body's health.
