Information on Hair Loss in Dogs
Hair loss in dogs can be a sign of several medical conditions. Most causes of hair loss will require veterinary treatment.
-
Fleas
-
A common cause of hair loss in dogs, flea infestation leads to flea saliva on the hair and skin. This saliva has high levels of histamines that provoke an itchy reaction, leading the dog to scratch excessively, sometimes to the point of losing hair in patches.
Location
-
If your dog's hair loss is due to fleas or mosquitoes, it is likely the bald patch will form in a roughly triangular shape between the base of the tail and the shoulder blades.
-
Anxiety
-
Dogs who are bored, anxious or stressed can develop a condition called acral lick dermatitis (neurodermatitis), where the dog licks himself to the point of hair loss and even breaking the skin.
Hormones
-
A hormonal imbalance can cause hair loss. Suspect this condition if your dog's hair loss begins on her legs and progresses up her trunk.
Mites
-
Hair loss due to mite infestation is suspected if the pattern of hair loss is in patches that are circular, accompanied by intense scratching; plus crusty red bumps and scaly skin.
