Side Effects of Tylenol Codeine

Tylenol with codeine (acetaminophen and codeine phosphate) is a medication used to treat mild to moderate pain. Two forms are available: Tylenol No. 3 (300mg acetaminophen, 30mg codeine) and Tylenol No. 4 (300mg acetaminophen, 60mg codeine).

Nervous

Tylenol with codeine can impair cognition and cause drowsiness. You should be aware of how Tylenol with Codeine affects you prior to operating a motor vehicle or operating heavy machinery.

Respiratory

Tylenol with codeine can cause respiratory depression, which can be a potentially fatal side effect, especially in the case of an overdose.

Liver Toxicity

Liver toxicity is a potential side effect of Tylenol with codeine. Alcohol should be avoided when taking this medication. Patients with impaired liver functioning should not take Tylenol with codeine.

Skin

Development of a rash and/or itchy skin may develop with use of Tylenol with Codeine. Consult your physician if these symptoms develop.

Cardiovascular

Tylenol with codeine may lower blood pressure and/or lower heart rate. Consult your physician prior to taking Tylenol with codeine if you have a cardiovascular condition.

Abuse and Dependence

Tylenol with codeine has a high potential for abuse and dependence. Frequent misuse, such as exceeding the recommended dose, can cause potentially fatal liver damage. Withdrawal symptoms include insomnia, vomiting, excessive sweating, anxiety, restlessness, agitation, abdominal cramps, blurred vision, and tremor.
