Student Visa Requirements for Canada

Each year, more than 130,000 students from around the world go to Canada to study, according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. There are more than 90 universities to choose from throughout the country. Getting a student visa to study in Canada is a simple process.

Before Applying

Applicants must have been accepted at a recognized school, university or college in Canada before applying for a study permit.

Eligibility

Student permit applicants must prove they have enough funds to pay for tuition, fees, living expenses and return transportation. Applicants must pass a criminal check and physical exam.

Applying

An application package must be completed. This package can be downloaded from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. Incomplete applications result in denial of a study permit.

Required Documentation

Applicants must submit a school acceptance letter, proof of identity, proof of financial support and a letter of explanation, which is needed if the permit is not desired right away.

Cost and Processing

Study permits cost $125 in Canadian dollars. The average processing time for study permits is three to four weeks.
