Travel to Germany is ever-growing. More than 24 million people visit the country each year. Tourists bring an average of $36 billion dollars to the country, according to the World Tourism Organization. Before visiting, travelers need to know about entry requirements. U.S. citizens with a valid passport can visit and stay in Germany up to three months or 90 days.

  1. Passports

    • All people visiting Germany must have a current and valid passport. The passport must be valid for the duration of the trip.

    Visas

    • U.S. citizens who have a valid passport do not need a visa to enter the country if the visit is for up to three months. If the visit will be longer than that, you'll need a visa.

    Extending Your Stay

    • Travelers can extend their stay by applying for a tourist visa. Travelers need to allow 30 days for processing before the end of the three-month period.

    Applying for a Visa

    • Travelers must complete an application, which can be downloaded from the German Embassy, Washington, D.C., website or can be picked up from any regional German Embassy.

    Required Documentation

    • Travelers must present a valid passport, proof of funds for the duration of the trip, photo identification, two passport photos, an employer reference letter and an itinerary. The visa fee is $92.
