Job Description of a Loss Control Manager

Loss control managers are known by a number of other titles, including store detectives and loss prevention managers. These titles all refer to an individual responsible for minimizing theft in retail stores.

  1. Function

    • Loss control managers monitor video screens and patrol sales floors in plainclothes to spot shoplifters and monitor employee theft, apprehending perpetrators when spotted. Managers also investigate losses when no suspect is easily identifiable.

    Types

    • In some stores, loss control managers also supervise loss prevention associates who also monitor video screens and work patrols, while in other stores all employees in the loss prevention department are designated as "managers."

    Time Frame

    • Loss control managers work whenever the store that employs them is open for business, meaning that many positions require evening and weekend hours. Stores that are open 24 hours per day also need loss control managers to work overnight shifts.

    Education

    • Many loss control managers receive only on-the-job training and have no secondary education. Others complete training programs from security schools or earn associates or bachelors degrees in criminal justice or criminology.

    Certification

    • The Loss Prevention Foundation offers voluntary "LPQualified" certification to workers in the field who successfully pass a written examination.
