Mexican Dating Traditions

In traditional Mexican homes, the family is the most important aspect of their lives. Though dating and courtship practices have in some cases been influenced by modern trends, this love and respect of family still plays a big part in how young people get to know each other.

  1. Father's Approval

    • In traditional Mexican families, the father is very much the head of the household. He has the final say in allowing a couple to date. If it is an extended family, the grandfather also has input.

    Group Dating

    • In Mexico, it is traditional for young people to go out in groups rather than one on one as in the United States.

    Location

    • Rural Mexican families tend to follow traditional dating customs more closely than those in the larger cities. Exposure to American culture has influenced the younger generation, giving many a more liberal view on dating practices.

    Gender

    • In Mexico, the male is still considered to be the dominant partner. Women are expected to be more feminine and allow the male his leadership role. He asks for the date, and he pays the expense for both of them.

    Romantically Inclined

    • Mexican couples tend to show their affection for one another. Hugging, kissing and the giving of small gifts are very much a part of courtship, but a sexual relationship is not pursued until the pair has made a long-term commitment.
