Siberian Ginseng Dangers

The adaptogen herb eleuthero is sometimes referred to as Siberian ginseng in the United States; however, it is unrelated to the true ginseng species. Eleuthero is generally regarded as safe, but it associated with some potential dangers.

  1. Drug Interactions

    • Eleuthero can increase the absorption of digoxin and barbiturates; this can lead to an increased incidence of dangerous side effects, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center website.

    Sleep Problems

    • Although Siberian ginseng is famed for its ability to enable healthy sleep cycles, some users have reported insomnia or fatigue while taking eleuthero.

    Cardiovascular Side Effects

    • Eleuthero can worsen some cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension and cardiac arrhythmia.

    Headache

    • Siberian ginseng may cause mild to moderate headaches; this is a result of changes in blood flow to the head.

    Rare Side Effects

    • In sensitive individuals, eleuthero may cause confusion, vomiting, nosebleeds or diarrhea.
