Candida Esophagus Symptoms

Candida is a type of fungus belonging to the yeast family and is found in the mouth. Although candida is always present, under certain conditions it can multiply and cause problems. When the complications from a candida infection spread to the esophagus, the resulting condition is known as candida esophagitis.

  1. Cause

    • Under normal conditions the growth of candida is kept in check by the body's own immune system and other kinds of bacteria which compete with candida for survival. However, if the immune system becomes weakened or the organisms which keep candida under control are not present, it can grow out of control.

    Initial Symptoms

    • A candida yeast infection is often characterized by the appearance of milky white lesions inside the mouth. At first these lesions may appear on the tongue, cheeks, gums or any of the other soft tissues.

    Progression

    • As the candida infection progresses, the lesions may spread to the back of the mouth and tonsils. It is at this stage they may start to bleed and become painful.

    Candida Esophagitis

    • In the most severe cases, the lesions from a candida infection can progress to the back of the throat and down into the esophagus (candida esophagitis). This can cause extreme chest discomfort and a severe burning sensation in the throat making eating extremely painful and uncomfortable.

    Treatment

    • To treat candida esophagitis, a physician will prescribe an anti-fungal medication such as Fluconazole or Amphotericin. Pain medication may also be prescribed.

    Prognosis

    • According to the National Institute of Health, developing candida esophagitis is a sign of a weakened immune system. While the infection can be treated, the ultimate prognosis depends on the immune system problem that caused the infection.
