Types of Internet Browser

In this Information Age, many devices can connect to the Internet. The Internet browser used on your desktop computer may differ from the one on your Blackberry or Wii because of size, availability, security needs and operating system.

  1. Operating System

    • Your browser choices can depend on your operating system; Apple computers rely most on the Safari browser, while Windows users have Internet Explorer. Some programs like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have multiple versions for different operating systems.

    Device Size

    • While your desktop computer may have enough hard drive space for a browser heavy with added plug-ins, your Blackberry or netbook has much less space and needs a smaller program like Opera Mini or Google Chrome.

    Speed

    • The more plug-ins you add to your browser, the slower it can become. Keeping any browser streamlined will allow it to work faster.

    Security

    • As hackers become familiar with a browser, they find new holes in the programming they can exploit. Programs like Internet Explorer have experienced security issues in the past, but keeping any browser updated to the latest version reduces your security risk.

    Availability

    • The Opera browser has a version for nearly all platforms from the Wii game system to web-enabled TV sets, while Firefox and Internet Explorer are made mainly for desktop or laptop computers.
