Doses & Side Effects of Geodon

Geodon (ziprasidone) is an antipsychotic medication used in treatment of psychotic disorders (i.e., Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder) and Bipolar disorder. It has shown efficacy with treating both conditions. Discuss whether Geodon is appropriate for you with your physician.

  1. Doses

    • Geodon is available in capsule form with strengths of 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg and 80 mg. It is also available in injectable form in 20 mg/mL single use vials.

    Tardive Dyskinesia

    • Tardive dyksinesia is a potentially permanent side effect associated with many antipsychotics that involves involuntary muscle movements.

    Diabetes

    • Geodon is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, especially when a family history of diabetes is present. The exact reason for this is unknown.

    Rash

    • A skin rash may develop as a result of taking Geodon. If this occurs, contact your physician immediately, since it may be a sign of a serious allergic reaction.

    Weight Gain

    • Geodon is linked to an increased risk of weight gain. Consult your physician if this becomes bothersome. Changing diet and adhering to an exercise routine may help lessen the risk of developing this side effect.

    Dizziness

    • Dizziness is a common side effect of Geodon. This side effect is more likely to develop with increased dosages.
