Planet Hollywood History

Planet Hollywood is a company that is perhaps most famous for its association with Hollywood stalwarts Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its headquarters is in Orlando, Florida.

Origin

Planet Hollywood was founded in 1991 as a theme restaurant, drawing inspiration from the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood scene. The restaurant's founder was Robert Earl, former president of Hard Rock Cafe.

Early Years

In 1994, a sports-themed chain of cafes was added to Planet Hollywood. Two years later, the company went public.

Expansion

Planet Hollywood opened a resort hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2007. The company also was scheduled to open The Planet Hollywood Towers in fall 2009, a vacation ownership resort that would be directly linked to the resort and casino.

Troubled Times

Planet Hollywood has not been without its failures. An ice cream venture was scrapped, and the company has gone bankrupt twice. Schwarzenegger cut his financial ties with the company in 2000, disappointed in its performance.

Today

As of September 2009, Planet Hollywood had 15 restaurant locations worldwide, including five in the United States. Locations were planned for Kuwait and India.
