Duphaston Side Effects

Duphaston is a brand of synthetic hormone (dydrogesterone) that is similar to the naturally occurring female steroid hormone progesterone. Progesterone plays an important role in regular menstruation, the development of a healthy uterine lining and maintaining pregnancy. Duphaston is not available in the United States.

  1. Uses

    • Duphaston is prescribed for many conditions that may result from progesterone deficiency. It is used for hormone replacement therapy and to treat irregular or painful menstruation, endometriosis, infertility and to help prevent miscarriage.

    Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects associated with Duphaston include bloating, dizziness, headache and nausea.

    Hormonal Effects

    • Hormonal changes due to Duphaston use can result in acne, breast tenderness or enlargement, changes in sex drive, fluid retention, spotting between periods and weight gain.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Rarely, some women have developed anemia or abnormal liver function while taking Duphaston. Women also can experience an allergic reaction, usually in the form of a rash, to the medication.

    Contraindications

    • Women should not take Duphaston if they have a history of cardiovascular disease, gallbladder or liver disease, unusual vaginal bleeding or hormonal cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer.
