What Do I Need to Open a Bar?
Opening a bar can be a challenging process. Still, with the appropriate preparation, the effort can provide you with years of financial stability and enjoyment. Before you can purchase the liquor or beverages, there are several things that you will require.
-
Liquor Licensing
-
If you are opening a liquor or spirits bar, you will require the appropriate liquor licenses to meet your state or locality requirements. Speak with your local representative for details.
Food and Beverage Licensing
-
If you choose to sell food in your location, you will also require the appropriate food and beverage license. This may be in addition to the liquor license or a completely separate license. This is based on locality.
-
Ideal Location
-
Successful bars are positioned in ideal locations. Choose your location wisely. Consider your target market, parking lot size, capacity size, locality requirements and other personal requirements.
Furniture
-
Furniture and seating is an absolute requirement for your bar. Choose your pieces based on the atmosphere that you wish to promote. Dispensers, refrigerators, coolers and other equipment should be purchased as needed.
Staff and Security
-
Staff and security should be hired based on the bar's requirement and size. Bartenders must be at least 21 years old. Security staff should be experienced. Some states require security staff to hold licenses and/or certification.
Business Plan
-
A clearly written business plan is highly recommended. The business plan should discuss your current status and forecast the future of your business. It will help to secure viable financing and licensing.
