Mural Activities for Elementary Students

According to the Art Miles Mural Project, engaging students in mural creation has many benefits, including improving communication, promoting literacy, teaching respect and having fun.

  1. Fresco

    • Discover Fresco's workshops teach the fresco technique by having students create an image, trace it onto a mold, mix plaster and apply paint to the wet plaster. Displaying each child's project in a large group results in a fresco-style mural.

    Mosaic

    • Mosaic murals are created by piecing together glass, ceramic, plastic or other materials. One mosaic idea found on Princeton Online's lesson plans page suggested using pieces of broken crayons attached to plywood with glue in the image of a barn and countryside.

    Tile Mural

    • The Andy Warhol Museum recommends using tile murals to teach collaboration skills, and suggests cutting a "large piece of paper the size of the planned mural, then drawing a grid on the paper that corresponds to the size and number of tiles." Encourage students to consider "content (images, words, symbols), composition and color choice."

    Portable Murals

    • Movable murals can be good starter projects for elementary students. Artists Helping Children recommends painting on canvas, pieces of cambric cloth, foam core board, bricks, plywood or any other dry surface.

    Murals and Language Arts

    • Illustrating a story's setting, plot or characters on a large sheet of butcher paper with crayons, markers or paints is an inexpensive way to create a classroom mural.
