Saturn can be seen by the unaided human eye and is the second largest planet in our solar system. It is surrounded by seven major rings that are formed from ice particles.

  1. Atmosphere

    • Saturn's atmosphere is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium. Saturn is covered by bands of dense clouds.

    Rotation

    • Saturn rotates completely every 10 hours and 39 minutes, at an axis angle of 27 degrees. It takes Saturn approximately 10,759 Earth days to journey around the sun.

    Temperature

    • The average temperature at the top of Saturn's clouds measures negative 285° F.

    Density

    • Saturn is the least dense planet in our solar system and would actually float if surrounded by water.

    Space Studies

    • In 1973 the first space probe was launched to study Saturn. This probe passed within 13,000 miles of Saturn on Sept. 1, 1979, and sent back photographs and scientific data to NASA.

    Fun Fact

    • Saturn has 25 moons that are at least six miles in diameter, and several smaller moons. The largest moon, Titan, is bigger than the planet Mercury.
