Fetal Implantation Symptoms

Implantation occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. A fertilized egg usually remains in the fallopian tube for three days before traveling to the uterus and implanting.

  1. Time Frame

    • Implantation usually occurs about six to 12 days after ovulation.

    Common Symptoms

    • Very light bleeding or spotting--known as "implantation bleeding"--is one of the most common signs of implantation, experienced by about one-third of women. Blood is usually pinkish or brownish; it may be light enough to escape notice.

    Other Signs

    • Other symptoms of implantation are minor cramping, a rise in basal body temperature or a temperature dip lasting one day.

    Considerations

    • Symptoms of implantation are usually subtle and not experienced by all women. Their presence or absence is an unreliable predictor of pregnancy.

    Fun Fact

    • Just before implantation, the fertilized egg is called a blastocyst; it becomes an embryo after implantation.
