What Are the Causes of an Intense Itching Rash on the Scalp?
An itching rash on the scalp can be a minor and easily treated condition, but it may also be the sign of a more serious condition. Contact your doctor if over-the-counter remedies do not help your ailment.
-
Symptoms
-
Common symptoms associated with itching scalp include flaky skin on the scalp and hairline, dryness of the scalp and hair, or a red rash on the scalp. Take note if you experience a rash or blisters on any other areas of the skin.
Identification
-
Determine whether your itchy scalp is part of a more comprehensive skin problem or is located only on the scalp. This can determine whether you have a dry scalp disorder like scalp psoriasis or seborreic dermatitis, or an overall skin disorder like tinea versicolor or shingles.
-
Causes
-
Causes of an itchy scalp include head lice, shingles, scalp psoriasis, sebborrheic dermatitis, tinea versicolor, dandruff and pruritus. Your doctor can determine which ailment you have specifically depending on your symptoms.
Treatments
-
Treatment for scalp psoriasis and dandruff is available over-the-counter in the form of medicated dandruff shampoos. Lice treatment is also available over-the-counter. Other scalp disorders must be treated with a doctor's prescription, and may include anti-fungal medications.
Warnings
-
Consult your doctor if you have any additional symptoms other than what is listed above. If your itchy scalp appears in conjunction with a fever, severe nausea or vomiting, it may be the sign of a more serious ailment.
