Side Effects of Steroids Used in Cancer Treatment

Steroids might be prescribed as part of cancer treatments. Steroids work to decrease swelling, reduce nausea, reduce allergic reactions and they can assist in killing cancer cells and shrinking certain tumors. However, there are a variety of side effects.

  1. Gastrointestinal

    • Steroids can cause stomach upset and ulcers. Steroids can also cause an increase in appetite--a positive side effect for most cancer patients who are struggling with nausea and weight loss.

    Increased Blood Sugar

    • Steroids are know to increase blood sugar in patients who are on a high dose or a long-term course. Blood sugars and urine will be checked to monitor this side effect; patients with diabetes will have to be monitored even closer.

    Infection

    • Steroids can weaken or suppress the immune system, making a patient more susceptible to infections.

    Behavior Changes

    • Steroids can cause significant mood changes. Irritability and anxiety are side effects of the steroids, as well as difficulty in sleeping.

    Fluid Retention

    • Steroids can cause the body to retain salt and water, which can lead to swelling, usually in the ankles and fingers. Abdominal bloating may also occur.

    Irregular Menstruation

    • Steroids in women can lead to irregular periods. Periods may be lighter or even stop while taking steroids.
