- Use form 1040X to make adjustments to your original 1040, 1040A, 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ or 1040EZ.
- Form 1040X is a two-page form divided into sections. The sections allot space for adjustments to be made to income and deductions, filing status and exemptions.
- According to the Internal Revenue Service, filing a 1040X is the preferred method for making adjustments to a taxpayer's original tax return.
- The processing time frame for an amended return is 8 to12 weeks. These forms cannot be completed electronically.
- Form 1040X must be filed no later than three years after the due date of your original return or two years after the date you paid the tax.
