Amended Tax Return Information

According to the Internal Revenue Service, tax returns should be completed accurately and honestly. Any mistakes found after the return has been completed should be corrected by the taxpayer using form 1040X.

    Purpose

  1. Use form 1040X to make adjustments to your original 1040, 1040A, 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ or 1040EZ.
  2. Features

  3. Form 1040X is a two-page form divided into sections. The sections allot space for adjustments to be made to income and deductions, filing status and exemptions.
  4. Significance

  5. According to the Internal Revenue Service, filing a 1040X is the preferred method for making adjustments to a taxpayer's original tax return.
  6. Considerations

  7. The processing time frame for an amended return is 8 to12 weeks. These forms cannot be completed electronically.
  8. Warning

  9. Form 1040X must be filed no later than three years after the due date of your original return or two years after the date you paid the tax.
