The Pyramid of Khufu--or "Great Pyramid of Giza"--is an iconic symbol of Egypt. It was the first of the Pyramids of Giza to be built.

  1. Significance

    • The Pyramid of Khufu is the largest of the group of Pyramids of Giza--close to Cairo in Egypt. It is the only surviving construction listed on the "Seven Wonders of the World."

    History

    • Each of the three Pyramids were dedicated to a different Egyptian king of the 4th Dynasty. Khufu was the second king of the 4th Dynasty and he ruled Egypt from 2609 to 2584 B.C.

    Time Frame

    • Khufu started work on the Great Pyramid as soon as he came to power. The project took around 23 years to complete.

    • The Pyramid of Khufu was originally 481 ft. tall and covered 13 acres of land. It was originally encased in smooth white limestone and capped by a pyramid of black stone,

    • Although the Pyramid of Khufu was the world's tallest structure for more than 3,800 years, the only surviving statue of Khufu is the smallest piece of Egyptian royal sculpture ever discovered.
