Blue Light Treatment for Rosacea

Rosacea is a condition that causes chronic flushing, redness and a warm or hot sensation on the skin. It is a skin inflammation that can cause emotional suffering in much the same way that acne can. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Blue light therapy is a medical treatment that uses light to stimulate a photosensitizing drug that is applied to the face. This creates an activated oxygen molecule that can destroy nearby cells.

    Significance

    • Some forms of rosacea may be greatly minimized with blue light treatment. The treatment can see anywhere from a 50 to 80 percent improvement, depending on the patient.

    Effects

    • Blue light therapy has been known to decrease inflammation, pimples and create smoother skin in some people with rosacea, while others don't see much improvement.

    Time Frame

    • The average treatment takes one to one and a half hours. The average person with rosacea needs between six and 10 treatments depending on the severity.

    Considerations

    • Blue light treatment for rosacea is seen as "off-label" since it was intended to treat acne.

    Warning

    • Avoiding the sun for at least one to three days is crucial after blue light therapy.
