Estrace Cream Side Effects
Women may experience side effects as a result of using Estrace cream, the brand name for a type of estrogen, to treat symptoms of menopause.

Irritation

Women apply this estrogen cream directly to the vagina. It may cause irritation at the application site. Because it is an estrogen, it may also cause tender, enlarged, or sore breasts.
Heart Effects

Estrace clinical trials have yielded that the most dangerous side effect of this medication is cardiovascular disease, putting patients at risk for stroke, high blood pressure and cardiac arrest.

Mental Acuity

The Women's Health Initiative Memory Study found that 2 percent of the women in the study who used Estrace had an increased risk of developing dementia.
Contradictions

Due to the risk associated with Estrace, women with a history of breast cancer, stroke or abnormal genital bleeding should not use this drug. Pregnant women should also avoid its use.
Precautions

Women who have high blood pressure, impaired liver function, hypothyroidism, ovarian cancer, asthma or epilepsy should consult their doctor before considering any estrogen-based medication.
