A standard king is the widest mattress size available measuring 76-by-80 inches. The California king is the longest mattress available measuring 72-by-84 inches. The difference is 4 inches wider or 4 inches longer. One king mattress is equivalent to two side-by-side XL twin mattresses.

Comforter and sheet sets must be purchased to correspond with mattress size. Sets typically labeled California king or king. Occasionally, flat sheets and comforters are interchangeable but fitted sheets must match.
