What Is a DVI D Connector?

A DVI-D connector is a cable between digital devices that provides an all-digital signal. It is most commonly used to connect computer video cards to LCD monitors. DVI cables in general have been replaced by HDMI cables in most HDTV and home theater setups.

  1. What Is DVI-D?

    • LCD monitor DVI input

DVI-D connectors transfer only digital signals, providing faster transfer rates and better quality than their predecessor, the VGA cable.

    Types of DVI-D connectors

    • Two DVI-D image types

There are two types of DVI-D connectors: single link and dual link. Single-link cables transfer digital information with one transmitter, and dual-link cables use two transmitters. Dual-link cables are inherently faster, produce a better signal and are capable of displaying higher resolutions and refresh rates.

    Using Converters With DVI-D

    • VGA to DVI-D single-link converter

DVI-D connectors cannot link to analog sources without using a converter, which changes an analog signal to a digital signal, or a digital signal to analog.

    Type of DVI connectors

    • The other two types of DVI connectors are DVI-A and DVI-I. DVI-A is an analog-only connector, and DVI-I can connect both, but not a combination of both.

    Determining Your Type of Connection

    • Consult the user manual for the devices you want to connect to see what input/output options are available (see Resources for a guide). Most computer video cards have analog and digital outputs, and most flat-panel LCD monitors have both. Connecting the digital video card output to the digital LCD input is the best choice. This is where a DVI-D cable works best.
