Different Kinds of Dice

People have been gambling and entertaining themselves with dice for thousands of years. However, dice don't just take the form of the familiar cubes that players commonly use in friendly games and casinos. They are available in many shapes and sizes.

  1. Standard

    • Six-sided cubes are the most common dice used in the Western world. On these dice, every opposing side adds up to seven.

    Non-Cubical

    • Ancient dice, and many modern dice, have more than six sides. The number of sides varies based on the game, ranging from seven to 100 sides.

    Colored or Graphic

    • Some dice games, such as Kismet, use colored numbers on the dice. Other games, such as Dungeons and Dragons or Settlers of Catan, Travel Edition, require graphics on each side of the dice.

    Casino

    • To ensure equality and fairness, casino dice are perfectly cubed. The precision in the manufacturing process allows for an equal probability that the dice will land on any side.

    Crooked

    • Many dice players cheat by adding weights to the sides of the dice. They may also make one side slightly larger than another or create a convex shape on one side.
