Lung Cancer Symptoms & Treatment
Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths in men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. More Americans die from lung cancer than of breast, rectal and prostate cancer combined. The American Cancer Society estimates that 159,390 deaths will occur in 2009 from lung cancer.

Symptoms

Symptoms of lung cancer include cough, coughing up blood, persistent chest pain, and shortness of breath. In some cases, chronic respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis may be warning signs.
Diagnosis

In diagnosing lung cancer a chest X-ray or CT scan my be preformed. If a mass is present, a lung biopsy may then be preformed.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment of lung cancer usually involves removing part or all of the cancerous lobe. In some cases the entire lung may be surgically removed.
Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy treatment is often used for treating late stage lung cancer. Chemotherapy may be used before or after surgery.
Radiation

Radiation treatment is used to kill and shrink cancer cells. It is most often used after surgery in hopes avoiding reoccurrence of lung cancer cells.
