Tamoxifen Rare Side Effects

Tamoxifen is a common oral prescription drug that is used to slow and help stop forms of breast cancer in both men and women by obstructing the production of the hormone estrogen.

    • There are common, rare and sexual side effects with this drug. Being aware of them before taking tamoxifen will help you be more prepared before and during treatment.

    Common Side Effects

    • Most users experience headaches, vomiting, various levels of nausea, skin rashes or hot flashes.

    Rare Effects

    • Less common side effects include cataracts, uterine cancer or stroke. The drug can also cause an increase in blood clots.

    Sexual

    • Women in particular who take this medication are subject to hot flashes, vaginal dryness, vaginal itchiness or skin rash specific to that location. Women may also experience decreased sexual desire.

    Warning

    • Unexplained vaginal bleeding along with pain in the pelvic area can indicate potentially serious types of uterine cancers. You should talk to your doctor immediately if you notice these side effects or experience full-body hives or swelling of any part of your body.
