Clindamycin Side Effects and Treatment

Clindamycin is an antibiotic usually prescribed for serious bacterial infections. It is marketed under the brand names Cleocin and Evoclin.

  1. Most Common Side Effects

    • Mild diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

    Thrush

    • Located either in the mouth or the vagina, this is a fungal infection. White patches in the mouth and changes in vaginal discharge are common symptoms.

    Pseudomembranous Colitis

    • This is a serious, life-threatening intestinal condition that may occur during treatment with clindamycin, or even weeks after treatment has stopped. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and cramping, and diarrhea. If these symptoms occur, you are urged to call your physician.

    Allergic Reactions

    • These are rare, but they do occur. Symptoms include hives, difficulty breathing and tightness in the throat or chest. Symptoms may be confined to the skin and include mild burning or stinging sensations, itching, rash and blisters.

    Warning

    • Certain medications include clindamycin as an ingredient. Brand names of such medications are Benzaclin, Duac, Acanya, Z-Clinz 5 and Ziana.
