Taking Unisom While Pregnant

Unisom sleeping tablets are often prescribed by doctors to treat morning sickness in pregnant women. Though Unisom is avaliable over-the-counter, talk with your doctor before taking any type of medicine during pregnancy.

  1. Unisom

    • Unisom is an over-the-counter sleep aid that is available in three forms. The form of Unisom often used to fight nausea during pregnancy is the sleep tablet containing 25 mg of the active ingredient doxylamine succinate. The other two forms of Unisom, SleepGels and SleepMelts, contain diphenhydramine HCl and should not be used by pregnant women.

    Doxylamine

    • Doxylamine is an antihistamine used as a sleep aid or to lessen symptoms of the common cold or allergies. This medication blocks histamine and acetylcholine made by your body causing drowsiness and relieving symptoms like sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes.

    Morning Sickness

    • Unisom in combination with the vitamin B6 is often recommended to combat nausea/morning sickness, and has been classified by the FDA as safe to use during pregnancy. Unisom and B6 are prescribed to hundreds of pregnant woman every year, relieving morning sickness symptoms for many of them.

    Benedectin

    • Bendectin was a drug that contained doxylamine and vitamin B6 that was once commonly used in the United States to combat morning sickness. Bendectin was removed from the market over a controversy that it was causing birth defects. Studies following this controversy found no causal relationship between Bendectin and fetal malformations.

    Last Trimester

    • The WebMD article on doxylamine states that women should discontinuing the use of products containing doxylamine during the last trimester of pregnancy as antihistamines might increase the risk of side effects such as seizures in newborns. Speak with your doctor if you are still experiencing nausea during the last trimester.
