Palm Oil Dangers

Palm oil is made from the fruit of the West Africa oil palm tree. In its healthiest form it is unrefined and a red-orange color. In its highly refined state it has very little color and less nutritional value.

  1. High in Saturated Fat

    • Although it is an oil made from a plant, palm oil is one of the few plant products that is very high in saturated fats. Saturated fats, like lard, are fats that are solid at room temperature.

    High in Calories

    • All oils are 100 percent fat and high in calories. Palm oil has about 120 calories per tablespoon and should be consumed in moderation.

    Lacking in Carotenoids

    • While unrefined palm oil is used in West Africa, the highly refined version used in the United States, lacks one of the richest sources of carotenoids. Among other benefits, carotenoids enhances the functioning of the immune system.

It is Generally a Generic Oil

    • Palm oil is rarely used on its own, thus eliminating any benefit it may have. It is generally a processed ingredient mixed with other oils.

One of the Three Tropical Oils to Avoid

    • Palm oil is considered one of the three tropical oils to avoid, the others being palm kernel oil and coconut oil. Because it is a saturated fat, many experts advise avoiding it all together.
